God commands the rich to boast in our humiliation because we'll pass away like flowers or grass. (James 1:10). That doesn't make sense. I've never really felt humiliated for having a lot of money. Sometimes I feel guilty around poverty, but not humble. There are two possible interpretations:
1. God has chosen us to be rich for a reason, and that should make us humble. Why would he choose little old me to have so much money?
2. The money that we have is just play money, and we should feel like little kids playing Life or Monopoly because we're not old enough to understand and play with real money.
I go for the second interpretation. What is "play money"? Money that doesn't really have any value. Money that's intended to just use for our temporary enjoyment--not lasting security. Sounds like the US Dollar to me. From God's perspective, we are passing around green pieces of paper so we can have temporary comfort and fun.
Real money, eternal currency, is wisdom. (Prov 3:13-15) The good news is that God hands it out freely. (James 1:5)
Now, based on that interpretation, should we take our responsibility to handle money lightly? Absolutely not! But we shouldn't just strive to make more and play the game the way the world plays it. We should play the way I play games with my 5 year old son, which is to play according to the rules and win. I don't let my son win because when I do, I teach him to play the wrong way. I do, however, give him hints along the way so that he plays better. But he never wins.
As a businessman, I want our investors and clients to know that I take thier money very seriously and that I play according to the rules--and I strive to win the game. However, I know that whatever happens in the game, it's just a game and real money is much more important to me.
